I’ve been hearing radio commercials for the Carl’s Jr. Green Burrito Taco Salad for a few weeks now, so it was only natural that while sitting at work last week, this was the first thing that popped into my head as an idea for lunch. Unfortunately, the idea popped into my head about 3 hours before lunch time, and I spent most of that three hours making myself hungry thinking about delicious mexican food. I have always enjoyed taco salads, and even though it is a fast-food burger restaurant, I figured I should give Carl’s Jr.’s rendition a try.
I know what you are probably thinking right about now, “this guy’s diet sure is unhealthy.” I’ll be the first to admit, my history of food reviews so far doesn’t paint a portrait of healthy living, and this review certainly won’t help (this taco salad comes in at nearly 1000 calories), but in the future I’ll try to come up with some healthier food reviews, just for you. For now, on to the calorie-fest…
Unfortunately, I went into this lunch plan without any idea of what this meal would cost me, and being the frugal person I am, this concerned me. Unfortunately, after thinking for the past three hours about eating a taco salad for lunch, I really didn’t have a choice. I was therefore somewhat disappointed when I ordered the taco salad, and found out that it was going to cost me $5. My ideal lunch budget doesn’t go over $3, but I guess sometimes it’s okay to splurge a little, to try something new, and get something new to review in the process; at the same time, I probably won’t order this again because of the price. Fortunately for me, when it came time to pay, the woman at the cash register rang up my order wrong and only charged me $4.02 - I offered to pay the remaining 98 cents, but she told me not to worry about it, and I got my lunch at a 20% discount.
A little cheered up by my unexpected discount, I dug into the taco salad, eager to quell my hunger that had grown so large. Thankfully, this taco salad was actually very tasty, so there was no problem in filling the void in my stomach. In fact, this was a very filling meal, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The Carl’s Jr. version of a taco salad includes a crispy shell, refried beans, lettuce, salsa, hot sauce, ground beef, two types of shredded cheese, and sour cream. The “salad” part of the name is of course almost a joke, the lettuce drowned out by all of the other delicious ingredients, and I found all of the ingredients to be fresh and good. Basically, I got just what I was expecting; there wasn’t anything that made this taco salad stand out above the rest, and there wasn’t anything that made it less desirable either, but it was very satisfying. This meal was a bit messy, but well worth the extra napkins.
One thing that confuses me about this taco salad is the “Green Burrito” prefix on the name - I don’t know what burritos might have to do with a taco salad, but I am guessing that maybe “Green Burrito” is a brand name that I haven’t heard of. If you have any insight on this issue, I would be happy to hear from you.
Have you tried Carl’s Jr.’s Taco Salad yet? What did you think of it? Have a recommendation for a better taco salad?, leave me a comment!

Not only does it have one of the worst fast food names in the history of the world (and that’s with Taco Bell’s stiff competition), Subway’s “Big Hot Pastrami” sandwich isn’t all that great either. I love pastrami, and I’m no stranger to Subway - I find that it is a cheap and somehow healthier feeling fast food choice than something like McDonalds (even if it’s not *really* healthier after adding bacon, ranch, and honey mustard to my sandwich, I can still feel healthier eating it). So, because I love pastrami, and Subway can be relied on to make a decent sandwich, I decided to try out their new pastrami offering.
Their posters proclaim that you will receive a half a pound of meat when you order a footlong “Big Hot Pastrami”, and it does come with a lot of meat, but what the poster doesn’t tell you is that the meat is thickly cut, very fatty, and not as flavorful as it should be. I went with swiss cheese and spicy mustard on my sandwich, just the way I like it, but the pastrami just didn’t live up to the quality that I was expecting. There is something magical about deli meats when they have been sliced thinly and piled graciously onto a sandwich, and this sandwich was not only missing the thinly sliced pastrami, it was also a jumbled messy pile - no grace involved. While some fat can be expected in pastrami, the meat I received on my sandwich had an excess of chewy fat, which rendered many of the pieces on my sandwich inedible.
Another downside to this disappointing sandwich is the price increase. Subway sandwiches seem to generally range between $3 and $4 for a 6-inch, but this one might actually top out the menu with a price tag well over $4. I guess when you are adding a decent amount of meat to a sandwich for a change, it’s only natural to pass the cost onto the customer, even if the meat is of the lowest quality.
The one redeeming quality about this sandwich was the fact that it was toasted perfectly, making the sandwich nice and hot the way it should be served; unfortunately, this did not save my meal, and I didn’t even finish it off. Luckily I had a bag of nice healthy potato chips to fill the void this sandwich left in my stomach. I don’t plan to order this sandwich from Subway again, but hopefully in the future they come out with better quality selections.
Anyone else like pastrami? What did you think of this sandwich?

Throughout my entire childhood I never once ate Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch. I had original Cap’n Crunch, and I had Cap’n Crunch with Crunch berries, and I even had the knock-off brand version of Cap’n Crunch, but I somehow missed out on the peanut butter version. Luckily, my girlfriend is well acquainted with Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch, and she has introduced me to it somewhat recently. So, in tribute to one of the first blog-style websites I enjoyed reading on a regular basis, emptybowl.com (a cereal review site, may it rest in peace), I would like to give my impressions on Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch.
Firstly, I’ll say that I love this cereal. As a sugar-cereal connoisseur, I can say with confidence that this one is delicious. Unlike traditional Cap’n Crunch the Peanut Butter version has a slightly smoother texture, but is still plenty crunchy and maintains the Cap’n Crunch style. Also preserved is the base flavor of Cap’n Crunch - the peanut butter taste is not overpowering and complements Cap’n Crunch very well. In the average time it takes me to eat a bowl of cereal, these puffs keep a good percentage of their crunchiness - but if they do happen to get a bit soggy, they are still great. Having a nice transition from crunchy to slightly soft is a good cereal experience in my opinion, and this cereal does a great job in that regard. Even the aftertaste left by Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch is enjoyable and not in any way bad. The integrity of the milk is maintained, and it makes for a great finish to a bowl. While I still enjoy original Cap’n Crunch as much as I always have, I now have an equally enjoyable alternative that I can turn to when I need to mix up my cereal choices.
In the spectrum of cereal pricing, Cap’n Crunch is closer to the top than the bottom, but it’s still not as expensive as some. I would say that for the quality of the cereal, this is worth the price most of the time.
Do you enjoy Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch? Hate it? What’s your favorite cereal?

My girlfriend and I were just presented with a dilemma. We were craving calzones from DP dough - but the local DP Dough franchise decided to close Tuesday and Wednesday, in preparation for not working on Thanksgiving, Thursday. I think this is incredibly bad business sense, and a tad lazy, but maybe the owner just needed an extended break? Either way, back to the dilemma - our craving for calzones would not be solved by ordering from DP Dough, so instead we decided to try out a new pizza from Domino’s, the Crispy Melt. We usually steer clear of Domino’s, preferring other restaurant’s recipes, but tonight it was an issue of urgency, and Domino’s is only a 30 second drive from my house (yes, I could have walked, but it is currently dark, snowy, and 15 degrees outside). This new Crispy Melt pizza from Domino’s has been haunting my TV screen for the past month, and I decided it was finally time to try it.
The pizza is actually quite delicious. We ordered online, and used the coupon for a one topping crispy melt pizza for $9.99 - we chose pepperoni as our topping. This pizza is like a sandwich, in that it has all of the toppings baked between two thin pizza crusts. The top has a bit of cheese and herbs melted onto it. The gimmick is, it is supposed to be crispy and melty tasting at the same time. We both thought the pizza turned out very good, and it lived up to the hype of having both crispy and melty textures, a unique texture experience. The size of the pizza probably isn’t worth the price tag, but in this instance it was worth it to fulfill a craving.
Have you tried this pizza yet? If so, what did you think?
